Professor Dr. ir. Leonardus Johannes Lambertus Donatus van Griensven (born February 15, 1941, in Eindhoven) is a distinguished Dutch phytopathologist and molecular biologist renowned for his extensive contributions to the fields of mycology and medicinal mushrooms. With a career spanning over five decades, Professor Leo has left an indelible mark on scientific research, particularly in the study of fungi and their applications.
Leo van Griensven embarked on his academic journey at Wageningen University in 1959, where he earned his degree in phytopathology. Delving into virology, his early research focused on the replication of RNA from a 2-component plant virus. Notably, in 1962, he worked as a student-intern at the Virology Lab at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.
In the late 1960s, Leo undertook postdoctoral research on experimental leukemia at the Sint-Louis Hospital in Paris. His international exposure continued with a post at the Salk Institute in San Diego, USA, from 1977 to 1979, where he explored the malignant catarrhal fever virus in mice.
Returning to the Netherlands, Leo became the head of the Experimental Pathology department at Erasmus University from 1969 to 1981. His role was pivotal in establishing an experimental pathology unit focused on the effects of oncogenic RNA viruses on hematopoietic stem cells.
From 1981 to 2001, Leo served as the director of the Mushroom Research Station in Horst. During this time, he played a crucial role in creating the world's first inbred white mushroom strain, Horst-U1, a significant commercial success.
Leo's contributions to the scientific community have garnered him widespread recognition. In 1995, he was appointed an Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau. His extensive body of work includes over 40 articles and five books on medicinal mushrooms, contributing significantly to the scientific understanding of these fascinating organisms.
In recent decades, Professor Leo van Griensven has shifted his attention to medicinal mushrooms. Notably, since 2001, he has been a co-owner and collaborator at Mushrooms4Health BV, based in the Netherlands. His work has focused on producing high-quality functional mushroom extracts mainly for research purposes, with an emphasis on Cordyceps and Lion's Mane.
Since 2022, Professor Leo van Griensven has been working in collaboration with Mama Mushroom, a holistic wellness venture that specializes in functional mushroom supplements. His expertise and guidance have been instrumental in ensuring the highest quality of Mama Mushroom's products, combining ancient mushroom wisdom with modern science.
Leo's passion for mycology and scientific research persists. Since 2014, he has been a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms. His research has maintained a global scope, with publications in various esteemed journals like PLoS One, Molecules, Food & Function, Food Research International, Carbohydrate Polymers, Journal of Bioenergetics and Biomembranes, and Food Chemistry.
